To install components of VMware Horizon 8 silently, you must use command-line options and properties from MSI (Microsoft Windows Installer). The Horizon 8 component installers are MSI programs and use standard MSI features.

For more information about MSI, go to the Microsoft website. For more information about the MSI command line options, go to the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) library website. To see how to use the MSI command line, you can open a command prompt on the Horizon 8 components computer and type msiexec /? .

To run a Horizon 8 component installer in silent mode, first enable silent mode on the startup program which extracts the installer to a temporary directory and starts an interactive installation.

You need to enter on the command line the options that control the startup program of the installer.

For example: VMware-Horizon-Connection-Server- y. y. y – xxxxxx . exe/s

The /s option is mandatory for the installation to be silent.

For example: VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. exe /s/v”command_line_options”

To instruct the MSI installer to interpret a string containing spaces, insert two sets of double quotes before and after the string. For example, you may want to install the Horizon 8 component in an installation path name that contains spaces.

For example: VMware-Horizon-Connection-Server- y. y. y – xxxxxx . exe /s /v” command_line_options INSTALLDIR=””d: \abc\my folder”””

In this example, the MSI installer passes the path to the installation directory and does not try to interpret the string as two command line options. Note the final double quote surrounding the entire command line.

The /v”command_line_options” option is mandatory to run a silent installation.

The control of the continuation of the silent installation is done by transmitting the command line options and the MSI property values to the MSI installer, msiexec. exe . The MSI installer contains the installation code for the Horizon 8 component. The installer uses the values and options that you enter in the command line to interpret installation choices and configuration options specific to the Horizon 8 component.

For example, you may want to install Horizon Agent silently and use only default installation options and features :

VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. exe /s /v”/qn”

You can also use the /qb option to display a basic progress dialog in a non-interactive and automated installation.

The /qn or /qb option is mandatory for the installation to be silent.

For more information about the other /q settings, see the Microsoft Dev Center website.

Use the INSTALLDIR = path format to specify an installation path. You can ignore this MSI property if you want to install the Horizon 8 component in the default path.

This MSI property is optional.

In an interactive installation, the Horizon 8 installer displays custom installation options that you can check or uncheck. In a silent installation, you can use the ADDLOCAL property to selectively install configuration options by specifying the options on the command line. The options that you do not specify explicitly are not installed.

In interactive and silent installations, the Horizon 8 installer automatically installs certain features. You cannot use ADDLOCAL to choose whether or not to install these non-optional features.

Type ADDLOCAL=ALL to install all the custom configuration options that can be installed during an interactive installation, including those installed by default and those that you must select, except NGVC. NGVC and SVIAgent are mutually exclusive.

The following example illustrates the installation of Core, BlastProtocol, PCoIP, UnityTouch, VmVideo, PSG and all the supported features on the guest operating system: VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. exe /s /v”/qn ADDLOCAL=ALL”

If you do not use the ADDLOCAL property, the custom installation options that are installed by default and the automatically installed functions are installed. Custom installation options that are disabled (not selected) by default are not installed.

The following example illustrates the installation of Core, BlastProtocol, PCoIP, UnityTouch, VmVideo, PSG and the default enabled custom installation options that are supported on the guest operating system: VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. exe /s /v”/qn”

To specify individual installation options, type a comma-separated list of installation option names. Do not leave spaces between the names. Use the format ADDLOCAL= value, value, value. .

You must include Core when using the ADDLOCAL= value, value, value property. .

The following example installs Horizon Agent with Core, BlastProtocol, PCoIP, UnityTouch, VmVideo, PSG and Instant Clone Agent features :

VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. exe /s/v”/qn ADDLOCAL=Core, NGVC

The previous example does not install other components, even those that are installed by default interactively.

The MSI ADDLOCAL property is optional.

This MSI property is optional.

The following example shows the installation of the patch :

msiexec /p VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86_64-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. msp /qn REINSTALL=ALL

This MSI property is optional.

The following example uninstalls the USB functionality :

VMware-Horizon-Agent-x86-YYMM-y. y. y-xxxxxx. exe /s/v”/qn REMOVE=USB”

This MSI property is optional.

For example: /l*v “”%TEMP%\vmmsi. log””

This example generates a detailed log file similar to the one generated during an interactive installation.

You can use this option to register custom functions that apply only to your installation. You can use the saved information to specify the installation features during subsequent silent installations.
