Measuring your windows – Les Tissus du Chien Vert
How to take the measurements of your windows?
The method for measuring your windows depends on the type of cladding you want to make. The diagrams below will help you get the right dimensions before visiting us in store.
For your projects of curtains and hangings
If a rail/bar is already placed
- WIDTH = the measurement of your rod excluding end caps
- HEIGHT = the measurement between the underside of the rod and the floor (or the window shelf)
If you don’t have a rail or a bar
- WIDTH = the measurement of your window and add 30 cm
- HEIGHT = the measurement between the upper limit of your window and the floor (or the window shelf) and add 15 cm
For your awning projects
A folded blind will have a minimum height of 28cm. Make sure that it will not interfere with the opening of your window once placed.
- WIDTH = the measurement of your window and add 5cm (for a spacing of 2.5cm on each side)
- HEIGHT = the measurement between the upper and lower limit of your window and add 30 cm (necessary to fold the blind)
Do you want to make your blinds or curtains yourself?
Then you need the right amount of fabrics. Here’s how to get the right footage :
Calculation for making a curtain / a hanging
1. Get the footage of a plain fabric
- For the width :
Multiply by 2 the finished width of your window (to get a nice size). Divide this measurement by the width of the chosen fabric and you get the necessary number of strips.
- For the height :
Add 30cm to your measurement to be able to make the hems.
- For the final footage:
You multiply the height by the number of lines.
“The width of my bar / rail measures 1.80m and the finished height of my hanging measures 2.80m. I opted for a plain fabric 1.40m wide to make my curtain. »
Width = 1.80m. X 2 = 3.60m
>3.60m. divided by 1.40m. = 3
Height = 2.80m + 30cm = 3.10m.
Footage = 3X3,10m = 9,30m. of fabrics
It will therefore take 9.30m. of fabrics to make your pretty hangings!
2. Get the footage of a patterned fabric
- For the width :
Multiply by 2 the finished width of your window (to get a nice size). Divide this measurement by the width of the chosen fabric and you get the necessary number of strips.
- For the height :
Add 30cm to your measurement to be able to make the hems. Divide this measurement by the fitting of your fabric. You get a number: take the decimal above and multiply this number by the fitting.
“The width of my bar / rail measures 1.80m and the finished height of my hanging measures 2.80m. I opted for a patterned fabric 1.40m wide to make my curtain. The fitting is 36cm. »
Width = 1.80m X 2 = 3.60m
>3.60m divided by 1.40m = 3
Height = 280cm +30cm = 310cm
>310cm divided by 36 (fitting) = 8.6 so 9 (upper decimal)
Footage = 3 X 3.24m = 9.72 m of fabrics (we round up to 9.75)
It will therefore take 9.75 m of fabrics to make your pretty hangings! Do not hesitate to ask us for a little calculation if you want to buy your fabric online.
Calculation for making a blind
- For the width :
Add 10cm to the finished width to make your hems.
- For the height :
Add 60cm to your measurement the passage of the chopsticks.
“The width of my blind measures 1.30m and the finished height is 1.30m. I opted for a patterned fabric 1.40m wide. »
Width = 1.30m + 10cm = 1.40m
Height = 1.30m + 60cm = 1.90m
Footage = So I have enough width by adding the 10cm since I chose a fabric in 140cm width. So I choose my quantity according to the height I need, that is to say 1.90m. of fabrics.
It will therefore take 1.90m of fabrics to make your blind! Do not hesitate to ask us for a little calculation if you want to buy your fabric online.
