How to measure the opening of a window when installing a plastic window?

A customer calls me and asks if it is possible to order windows according to the dimensions he has already measured.

Well, I went to the client and told him that it was possible. I won’t do it again, because he made the wrong measurements.

Yes, and there is nothing to save, because the service is free, if you place a window order.

But to tell how to measure the window for the installation of a plastic window, I still consider it necessary. Useful information below.

How to measure the window yourself

Do you know what a quarter is? And what is the opposite? Or a direct opening? If you have no idea what it is, then don’t even try to measure yourself. With the similar appearance of urban development, the measurement of windows can be completely different in two seemingly identical houses. Therefore, there can be no clear instructions here.

As a rule, a measurer is an experienced former installer in a particular type of construction, but even experienced specialists with an experience of 5-7 years are mistaken. And even they are sometimes forced to break the slopes or remove part of them. And his tool is not only a tape measure, but also a hammer, a chisel, and sometimes a scrap metal. Therefore, first determine the type of your opening.

Quarter. This is a special structure of a concrete or brick wall. At the same time, the size of the street-side window is 5-25 cm smaller than that of the room opening. About 80% of the buildings in Moscow have similar dimensions. Most standard panel houses have a quarter of them, and in brick houses they are almost always present.

Back quarter. This happens rarely, mainly at the ends of buildings. In this case, the size of the outside is larger than that of the inside. Here, the structures must be measured with special care.

Direct opening – the size of the window on the outside is the same as the one on the inside. Basically, this is a private building.

You know that there are openings where there is a quarter on the sides and no top or bottom. And there is a reverse situationon the top and bottom, but on the left and on the right. At the top can be simple, but below the opposite and vice versa. All these indicators form many combinations.

If you think that if the apartment has one window and a quarter, the others are the same, you are deeply mistaken, they may be different. And then there is a certain type of houses, where they were inserted into the production of a concrete slab, and the slope was poured with a concrete-based mixture. When we look at it visually, it seems that it is a direct opening.

But when disassembling, these slopes are destroyed, and the opening becomes larger. And these houses are not so few. Define and take into account all this – all art based on many years of experience. In wooden buildings, everything is usually closed so that nothing is visible. This specialist will remove everything that interferes with the inspection.

Before taking a measurement, listen to the advice: without a very strong need, do not order plastic constructions measured by you personally. It is very likely that the structures will be less than necessary, then there will not be enough light in your room. And even worse, if it will be more, in this case you have to redo the windows or increase the opening, which is very problematic.

If you want to know the approximate dimensions, simply measure with the tape measure the length and width of your window from the side of the room. For calculation by phone, this is enough, the error will not exceed a thousand rubles and may even be in your favor.

If you need to measure yourself. Therefore, we will describe how to measure windows with a quarter and straight walls. Reverse and other cases will leave specialists.

Measured by a quarter.

The size of the street side is smaller than the size of the room. In order to measure the width of the window, measure the outer distance, from one side slope to the other, hold the end of the adhesive tape as close to the frame as possible. Add to this size 3-6 centimeters. For example, if the width is 140 cm, the height should be 146 cm.

To protect yourself as much as possible from errors, measure the width of the room. It must be at least 5 cm wider than the window, that is to say no less than 151 cm. If the distance is less, for example 148 cm, decrease to 143 cm. plastered. The plasterer will be removed, so in a brick less than 6 cm is not added.

If the internal distance is much larger than the product, for example 160 cm and even more, do not be tempted to enlarge the structure. In this case, the plastic frame will completely go in a quarter, and only the glass will remain on the street, it threatens to freeze, due to incorrect measurement.

To measure the height, also take the length of the external opening, from the low tide to the upper external slope. This is usually the height of the product. Nothing is added to it, because a support profile 3 cm high is set under the window, a window sill is attached to it. That is, if the height is 150 cm, then the product will be 150 cm and more. Support profile, total – 153 cm. Also check yourself by measuring the height of the room. There should be no less than 5 cm more than 150 cm, that is, at least 155 cm.

Measurement of a direct opening

Smooth and straight walls are often found in private houses made of wood and brick. It is necessary to measure the width and subtract 4-6 cm, that is, if the width is 150 cm, then the drawing is 144-145 cm

The maximum size is minus 8-10 cm, that is, if the value is 150 cm, then the height of the window is 142 cm and an additional 3 cm profile, that is, the total value is 145 cm.

If you measure in an old house, clean the surfaces, remove the trays, you should see a natural look, without details. If the building is made of wood, it’s not so scary. During installation, you can enlarge it, for example, with an ax (and this happens).

And yet – if it is possible to call a measurer or remove the old product before measuring, do not risk expensive products, plastic structures are not a cheap pleasure.

How to do window counting?

Everyone who first discovers the installation of plastic windows is wondering “where to start?”. In order for the first installation of Windows to be successful and you get a good result, you need to familiarize yourself with the materials on our site, which contain all the necessary information about installing plastic windows.

The first and most important work is assigned to the measurer. Quite often, the client is completely unaware of what the walls near his house are and what is in them. Within the framework of this simple call with a descriptionyour window to order the necessary window will not be enough.

Of course, the client is able to point out the parameters for opening the window, but only a professional worker with satisfactory experience in this service sector can determine the full scope of the upcoming work. A good specialist must have analytical skills, be aware of the future construction of windows, and also have personal experience in installing windows.

Basic measurement rules

Measurements relating to the future plastic window should be carried out both from the inside of the opening (inside) and from the outside (from the street). The parameters of these two measurements are extremely important for determining the depth of a quarter of the existing window opening. After all, the final size of the window is influenced by many factors.

One of the factors that must be taken into account when measuring may be the inclination of the existing opening, in which the size of the window must be increased by the magnitude of the inclination. In order to avoid the appearance of through gaps between the window and the edge of the opening, the size of the PVC window should exceed that of the external window opening by 3-4 and 1.5-2 cm in width and height, respectively.

To achieve such a result, it is possible to increase the total size of the window construction or enlarge the window. In the second case, additional profiles will be used by hanging in the box. After determining the parameters of the future window, they must be compared with the control window.(internal) window opening settings.

During this Aspectmontage, it is possible to detect any error that could have been made during previous calculations. It is necessary to determine the thickness of a layer of plaster applied to the internal slopes to compare the edges of the window and determine whether it is necessary to remove the slopes when installing a window construction. Obviously, the amount of additional work should be minimized.

The measurement requires:

  1. Correct measurement of the opening parameters.
  2. Accurately calculate the dimensions of the structures (global and internal) to be manufactured.
  3. Taking into account the size of the window sill, mosquito nets, ebb.
  4. Agreements with the client on the following points:
  • what will be the window cover;
  • select the style and configuration of the window;
  • coloring solution for seals, binding and fittings;
  • select the type of glazing;
  • determine the number, type, color and design that the blind and the mosquito net will have;
  • The choice of material, color and dimensions of the sill, slope and window sills.

How to measure the window itself

The most convenient for measuring the opening is a tape measure or a telescopic ruler equipped with a digital display. The usual 5 m tape measure with an 18 millimeter tape was used. The opening can have quarters (protrusions from the outer part of the wall, depending on the size of the brick inside the opening), or maybe without them. Openings with quarters are most often found in townhouses, openings without quarters in cottages.

The height of the opening is measured twice – on the left and on the right, while the width is measured once, at the bottom. If you have doubts about the location of the contour elements of the openings relative to the horizontal and Aspectmontagel, you should use the level to determine the deviation and correct all calculations.

The dimensions of the structure in the opening without quarters will be 2 to 4 centimeters smaller than the corresponding dimensions of the opening. In addition, the Aspectmontagel dimension should finally be reduced by the thickness of the sill, which will be installed in the future under the window.

The calculation of the parameters of the opening with quarters and the parameters of the future construction of windows is a more complicated process, especially in the case of measuring the opening of old windows and doors.

First, it is necessary to determine the thickness and height of the window sills and measure the height and width between the outer quarters and the inner slopes against the wall near the window. The width of the future window should on average exceed by 6 cm (3 to 9 cm) the width of the outer quarters.

In case of difference between the sizes greater than 6 cm, it is advisable to use wooden extensions (raw) or PVC extensions. As for the height of the future window, it should be 3-6 centimeters longer than the Aspectmontagel distance between the outer quarters. The height of the frame in the lower quarter should not exceed 2 cm

In the upper quarter of the frame, the length of the mosquito net allows it. If the Aspectmontagel or upper quarter is missing, the entry into the Aspectmontagel quarter will be 1.5 + 4.5 centimeters, and into the lower quarter – 2 centimeters. 1 + 2 centimeters from the wall is left for insulation.

If necessary, measure the window with a balcony door and the parameters of the door and window, as well as the general parameters of the door with a window. To calculate the width of the door, consider its lower part. The lower end of the door box and the stone plinth should have a free space of 1.5 +2 cm between them for insulation.

If you have doubts about the method of embedding a window construction (for example, in the case of a dense stop of the upper crossbar to a reinforced concrete bolt), you can use a hammer and a blunt chisel to remove the casing and break a small piece of wall material. This way you will avoid errors in the size of the future window.

All these measures are not difficult for a professional to do, which is why we recommend that you call Freegager and order the installation of plastic window models on our website.

Tips for window design

The dimensions of the shutter must comply with the standards specified in the catalog of window systems and not exceed the maximum possible. The tilting belt must have a minimum width of 40 cm. The size of the glass available for unilateral washing should not exceed 0.55 m and that of both sides should not exceed 1.00 m. The semicircular PVC arch can have a minimum width of 52 cm (diameter of the curvature).

When designing office partitions and glazing a loggia, it should be borne in mind that the movement of building elements through all doors in the apartment should take place without problems.

During measurements during the construction or reconstruction of a structure, the weight and overall dimensions must be coordinated with the project. The windows of a new house or cottage should be selected depending on the style of construction of the building.

How to properly measure the window

In order to correctly measure the window, it is necessary to take into account that the size of the window depends on the characteristics of the window opening and its size. Panel houses have standard openings, but in brick houses the openings may differ by a few centimeters or be non-standard (arbitrary). In the case of brick houses, the measurement of the windows must be approached with particular care.

It is possible to measure the window independently, without resorting to the services of a measurer from the companyinstallation of windows. Knowing the size of the wooden window will make it easier to calculate the approximate cost of the finished product. Of course, it is easier to remove the dimensions of the windows if the house has just been built and the window openings are empty, but the openings in which the old windows are installed will not be much more difficult, but will also be feasible.

Remove the size of the windows of a wooden house (new)

There is no accommodation in the wooden house (protrusions on three sides of the opening, to which a window is brought). You can choose the place where the wooden window will be installed relative to the wall. Most often it is installed flush with the outer wall. As with this option, it will be easier to make the outer trim of the windows, i. e. no external slopes will be needed – it will be possible to get by only with the casing.

We go directly to the sizing and start by measuring the window opening in width. To do this, measure the opening at the top and bottom. If the dimensions are not identical, take the one that is the smallest and subtract 50 mm from it (mounting joint under foam of 25 mm on each side). We know the width of the window, then we measure the height. We remove the size in the same way, take a smaller one and subtract 50 mm from it.

There is one nuance here: the presence and thickness of the window sills. The standard milling performed under the windowsill in the lower timber is 30 mm. If the windowsill is the same thickness or a little less, this is normal. In the event that the window sill is thicker, the difference between the thickness of the window sill and the milling should be subtracted from the height of the window.

If in a wooden house there is a draft box with an opening under the windowmeasured inside the box. The width of the outer envelope is determined taking into account the draft. The size of the standard box is 5 cm.

In order to calculate the width of the flat strip, we fold the handle on the wall and the box by 2 cm (4 cm on both sides), add 5 cm (box) and 25 mm (foam gasket). We get the result – the width of the trays should be 11.5 cm.

How to measure a window in a panel house (residential)

The panel house has old windows, which makes measurements a little difficult. Dismantling old windows is not possible because the manufacture of new wooden windows can take a month. Panel houses have openings with a quarter – there is a ledge on three sides (two from the sides and one from the top).

We need to determine the width of the window opening from the outside (from one quarter to the other). For this, through the open window (be extremely careful . ), the tape measure is the distance between the quarters. Next, measure the opening inside the premises, from one slope to the other.

We subtract the outer opening to get the depth of the quarters. Take, for example, the outer width of 1380 mm and the inner width of 1500 mm. The resulting difference of 120 mm is halved and we get the result of 60 mm – the width of the quarter. Now you can measure the width of the window.

By adding to the external dimensions on each side of 30 mm – 1380 + 30 + 30 = 1440 mm, this is the width of the window. The height of the window is measured in this way: the lower part should be at the level of the outgoing flow, and in the upper quarter30 mm is added. For example, the height of the upper quarter at low tide is 1400 mm, then adding 30 mm, we get the height of the window at 1430 mm. Accordingly, the size of the window to be ordered is 1440 x 1430 mm.

How to measure the size of a window in a brick house

In brick houses, or as they are also called “Stalinist”, the quarters can be quite deep – up to 10 cm. glass The thickness of the window and the frames (in the closed position) is 110 mm.

Also in accordance with GOST, the mounting seam should not exceed 40 mm. The easiest way out of this situation is to order a wooden window with an increased width of the window frame. It is quite feasible. In production, an additional timber of any width is added to the window frame beam and painted with the window. Thus, the assembly seam is compensated by an additional bar.

Now you can measure the window, but remember that in this case there may be many nuances, since each window is individual. Therefore, it is better to contact the window installation company. Only then can you be sure that everything is done correctly.

How to measure the opening under the plastic window with your own hands

Measuring a plastic window depends on the size of the opening you make in your house. If the dimensions of your opening are not standard and you are worried that you will not be able to properly insert a window into it, do not despair. Now plastic windowsdo by all individual sizes and shapes.

But if you already have windows made of another material that you want to replace with plastic, measuring the opening with your own hands, this article is for you. First, we will describe how to correctly measure the openings of plastic windows in openings with a “quarter” (a quarter is a protrusion from the outer sides of a window in a half-brick to which the window frame fits)

Since the window itself is located a quarter of 1.5-2.5 cm from the side, you need to add 3-5 cm to the internal size of the window. This will be the correct size of the window that you are going to buy.

Explanation of the above: the actual size of the window will be slightly wider than the one you measure inside (in contact with the internal side slopes). The width of the window will be less than the width of the opening with a window sill.

Now measure the height of the window:

  • If the measurement is carried out outdoors, the height between the outer upper slope and the base of the opening is removed by 2 cm for the formation of foam.
  • Then 1.5-2.5 cm is added to this size so that the window can fit into the upper quarter.
  • If you have a window with ebb and windowsill, subtract 3 cm from the resulting size, because we need to know exactly the size of the window.

If you use a Aspectmontagel profile, the height and width of the window will be reduced by 3-8 cm, which will go to the mounting foam. Sometimes it happens that a quarter exceeds 5 cm, in which case an additional profile is applied in order not to leave too much room for the foam.

Remember: the height of the plastic window should be less than the distance from the upper inner slope to the windowsill. With the profile of the support, the height of the window should be less than the distance between the upper inner slope and the underside of the sill.

If your opening does not have a quarter, the correct measurement of the plastic window will be as follows:

  1. 3-8 cm are subtracted from the width of the opening.
  2. 5-6 cm are subtracted from the height of the opening, of which 3 cm will go to the support profile, the rest to the mounting foam.

Measurements of a window opening in the openings

In conclusion, we draw your attention to the fact that the walls often have bends that should be taken into account. From there, the windows should be measured on the smaller sides (the enlargement of the wall can always be closed with foam). If you do not plan to install plastic windows yourself, we recommend that you invite a specialist to get accurate measurements.

Window measurement

The measurement of the opening for the installation of the window must be approached with great responsibility. After all, an incorrectly made measurement can lead to the fact that it will be necessary to carry out additional expensive work or redo a made plastic window. Most companies that produce windows do not recommend measuring themselves.

They are not responsible for the conformity of the size of the manufactured window to the window opening, if it is measured. produces the customer, not a specialized company.

But sometimes it becomes necessary to measure the window opening yourself. In this case, you must strictly follow the instructions for correctly measuring the windows.

There are two types of window openings:

  • and a quarter
  • one hour minus a quarter.

A quarter is a protrusion on the sides and above the window opening that prevents the window from falling and protects it from precipitation and wind entering the room. The quarter width in the panel house is 50 mm, in the brick – 65 mm, or the quarter of the brick.

Measurement of a plastic window

The measurement window takes place in 4 steps:

  1. calculate the size of the window opening
  2. reflux measurement
  3. threshold measurement
  4. determination of the size of the slopes

The measurement of the window opening starts from the street side, then moves inward. To do this, open the window and measure the width of the opening between the upper and lower quarters. These data may vary. To the smallest of the results, add 3-5 cm, if the house is made of panel, and 4-6 cm for a brick building. This value will be the width of the window.

To check whether the measurement of the window width was carried out correctly, compare the result obtained with the width of the opening from the inside of the window and with the distance between the places where the slopes touch the window frame. It must be between these values. To calculate the height of the window, measure the distance from the bottom of the opening window tothe edges of the upper quarter.

Add 2-3 cm to this value to cover the quarter and subtract 2 cm from the thickness of the foam. If the window has an ebb and a window sill, a sub-profile will be used for its installation. In this case, the height value of the window is reduced by another 3 cm. If the measurement is carried out correctly, the height value will be almost equal to the distance from the end of the upper quarter to the upper exit edge.

If the window opening does not have quarters, then, calculating the width of the window from the width of the opening, 3-8 cm is taken for the clearance for installation. The height is calculated by subtracting 5 to 6 cm from the height of the opening, of which 3 cm are on the support profile.

The length and width of the reflux are calculated as follows: 5 cm is added to the distance between the right and left quarters, that is, the length of the reflux. To calculate its width, add 2 cm to the distance from the end of the quarters to the window.

The window sill is measured from the side of the room. It should be borne in mind that the new plastic window is only 5-6 cm thick, while the previously installed windows are wider. Therefore, to calculate the width of the window sill, subtract from the distance between the outer frame of the old window and the edge of the window sill by 5-6 cm.

The length of the window sill is the distance from the edge to the inside of the window opening. The width and length of the slopes are measured inside the window opening. All values must be written in millimeters.

If you are building a house made of wooden logs, do not forget to take into account that it will not remain in place for less than two years. If the windows are to be installed after the log house has been assembled, it is necessary to subtract 10-15% for shrinkage and another 5-6 cm to calculate the height of the window from the height of the opening. The width of the window is measured as described above.

If you do not take into account the shrinkage of the log house, the fallen top crown of the log house can break the window. Experts recommend installing windows in the log house only after its reduction. The method of installing windows in a clipped house is different from the usual one, in that there should be no rigid fastening of the window to the logs, in order to avoid breaking the window or “hanging” the upper ledges.

A box is used attached to a bar inserted into a Aspectmontagel groove, sawn at the ends of the logs of the window opening. In this case, the crowns can go down the bar without breaking the window and not hanging.

If there is a possibility, you should entrust the measurement of the windows to the employee of the organization who will produce and install the windows. In this case, you can be sure of the accuracy of the measurement. In addition, the company will be responsible for the manufacture and installation of windows. If the measurement is made independently, then the responsibility will be borne by you.

How to measure the opening under the plastic window?

The measurement of a window opening under a plastic window is a mandatory and very important measurement, because the accuracy of these measurements determines the correct mounting and proper operation of the window. You need to understand that even in a typical building it is necessary to measure a window opening under a plastic window, becausethey may be different and there may also be openings of irregular shape or uneven wall thickness.

Entrust the measurement of the window opening to a specialist who will correctly perform the measurement taking into account all the features and defects of your window opening and will allow you to avoid problems with the plastic window in the future.

Consequences of an incorrect measurement

It is very important that the window opening measurements are carried out with millimeter accuracy. If during the measurement errors were made and the window turned out to be smaller than the required size, then it would be necessary to fill the cracks with mounting foam or increase the window slopes. Additional equipment will be required for this process as well as time.

After some time (maybe several years or several months), such a window begins to deform, cracks appear. The window begins to let in cold air and freezes in winter. In conditions of high humidity, you cannot avoid constant condensation on the windows and the formation of mold. In addition, the window loses its aesthetic appearance.

Difficulties arise when the manufactured window is simply not included in the window opening. Such a situation requires non-standard design solutions.

Those who nevertheless decided to carry out the window opening measurements themselves should, before starting work, accurately determine the materials that will be used for the exterior and interior decoration of the walls and more particularly the window slopes. To begin with, consider the general rules for measuring window openings of all types.

When measuring the opening of a window, it is important to understand that the window frame should not lean on the opening, but be slightly smaller. The space between the frame and the opening is called mounting and is designed to allow a natural expansion of the structure. According to the standards, such a gap should be between 2 and 5 cm. It is important to measure the opening of the windows inside and outside the room.

To determine the width of the window, it is necessary to make three measurements, measure the window opening on the upper edge, the bottom and the middle, and then select the smallest value.

To determine the height, the opening is also measured in three places (right, middle and left) and the window height is calculated from the smallest value. Now let’s consider in more detail, depending on the type of window opening.

Measurement of a window opening without a “quarter”

To determine the width of the frame of the future window, it is necessary to subtract from the width of the window opening (the smallest of the three measured values) the required mounting space from 20 to 40 mm, depending on the curvature of the wall. If you notice that the Aspectmontagel parts of the opening have a significant difference, it is better to take 40 mm.

The height of the window frame is defined by the difference between the height of the window opening (the smallest of the three measurements following the Aspectmontagel) and the size of the mounting slot in the upper part (15-20 mm), as well as the size of the support profile (30 mm).

The window sill should not block the radiatorheating! You need to take this into account and choose the optimal width of the windowsill. The length of the ebb is defined as the width of the window opening onto the street, increased by 60 to 80 mm. The width of the ebb is determined from the window frame to its edge and the ebb can protrude from the outer wall by 30 to 50 mm.

It is also necessary to calculate the size of the windowsill and the ebb. If there is an old window sill, it is enough to measure it with a tape measure. If the window sill is not installed, it is necessary to add 50-100 mm side to the width of the window opening to determine the length. The width of the window sill depends on the depth of the window opening.

Measurement of the window opening with the “quarter”

Window openings with a quarter, that is, a protrusion along the outer perimeter of the window on the fourth part of the brick, are more difficult to measure. Quarters in most cases are not symmetrical, distortions are possible. When measuring a window with a quarter, it is important to know a few basic rules:

The window frame should protrude 20-40 mm from the side side and 15-20 mm from the upper wall. The profile of the support should be 10-20 mm higher than the back wall, it is necessary for correct fixation of the reflux. The width of the window frame is defined as the width of the window opening between the outer slopes and more than 40-60 mm for the factory of the frame for quarters.

It is necessary to ensure that the resulting width does not exceed the width of the opening along the internal slopes, and also does not exceed the distance between the junction points of the internal slopes and the frame.

If during installation the window will be usedprofile of the support, the height of the window is determined as follows: the value from the bottom of the opening to the upper slope is minus 10-20 mm (at the level of the bottom mounting clearance), minus 30 mm of the support profile and plus 20 mm of the frame for the upper quarter.

The height of the window must not exceed the value between the bottom of the threshold and the upper internal slope. The dimensions of the window sill and the ebb are determined in the same way as the dimensions of the window openings without quarters.

It is important to understand that counting a window opening is the first and essential step in the installation of a plastic window. Having saved a little at this stage, you may have quite significant problems in the future. Is it worth the risk?
